Coming in third before the 5th and final leg of the NCA Stag Wars, Greenwood Balbina of Butch and Jake Macasaet, strangely found its way to the top, bagging the championship for the night, and the prestigious title of NCA Stagfighter of the Year.

After 4 stag derbies, Greenwood Balbina(19.5 points) was behind Sagupaan Hammer II-SP(20.5 points) of Patrick Antonio and behind pacesetter Mulawin A Jimafer(22 points) of Rudy Albano. On last Monday's elims(3-stag) Mulawin scored 2.5 points and thus validating its stag consistency(Cong. Rudy A. used Boy Ledesma's stags) while Greenwood and Sagupaan settled for 2 wins and 1 loss.

Early on in the 4-stag finals Wednesday, idol P.A. showed the way as he easily scored two wins on his first two fights(please note that champions and runner-ups in NCA derbies receive 2 bonus points and 1 bonus point respectively). People are abuzz in the coliseum, whether P.A. could overtake Mulawin's lead. Mulawin won its first fight against Swing-Greenfield of Engr. Marfori and Tony Tan. Not to be outdone, Greenwood followed suit winning convincingly against Mayor Viceo's San Rafael entry. Then Mulawin lost its second fight to Pasay's Eric and Butchoy's Diego and Talisa entry using Boy Lechon's breed, thus resulting in Mulawin's partial score of 3.5 as to P.A.'s Sagupaan 4 points after 5 fights in this derby.

Greenwood meanwhile, lurking from behind, racked up win no. 2 against Guts and Glory of Alex Tang(Vic Yu's handler transferred to this entry, there has been rumors that V.Yu is a partner of this entry). Then came P.A.'s third fight(don't know the breed, but the stags were banded by MIGBA, and they are all looking the same, medium station, white legs, dark red feathers and "lahat may puti sa tenga"). They also fight the same, fast, very fast and very good cutters(di pa nagpapauna ng palo). P.A.'s stag is pitted against Mayor Viceo's entry San Rafael(news is, he is using Nene Abello's bird). P.A. won in a minute as it immediately crippled San Rafael's stags in a few buckles(malulupit talaga). P.A. was all smiles as he left the rueda. He's now got the chance to snatch the Stagfighter of the Year title if only he wins his last fight, this time against Greenwood.

Mulawin, meanwhile, won its third fight against Richard Bates' Bumble Bee Balbina entry and also boosted its chance for the title. If it win its last fight, it will have a total of 5.5 points(and +1 as a runnerup, as the possible score of champion is now 6, no entry has perfect slate for this derby). Leading P.A. with 1.5 points coming into this derby but now down to 1, it just need to win the last one, and possibly tie P.A.'s Sagupaan to the title.(if Mulawin and Sagupaan would win their last fights, their score woud be tied and both would be co-StagFighter of the Year. Mulawin - 22+5.5+1(runner-up)=28.5 points; Sagupaan - 20.5+6+2(champion)=28.5 points.

But Greenwood has its destiny written all over, after winning the first leg of this circuit, it was eliminated in the succeeding one, thus enabling the competitors to catch up. It is now fight#31, Greenwood, toting a 4-1 slate, with 2 fights to go, faced Samahan BL of Boy Lechon. It looked like an easy win for Greenwood, but his stag choked, looking for air, fortunately one last kick finished off the opponent. I noted(in the program) his stags are banded by LGBA and assumed this is their own breeding of Bruce Barnett's sweaters, as shown in their colors and the way they cut(gamely accurate).


Facing Sagupaan of idol P.A in the championship(both with 5 wins and 1 loss), Greenwood Balbina was underdog, 8-11(normal case when you are pitted with P.A.). Sagupaan stag looked the same as the previous three who won(magkakapatid ata lahat sila). Greenwood looks like a Sonny Lagon stag(Blue Blade did not fare well in this circuit, scoring only 15 points, good for 9th place). Greenwood has advantage in height but Sagupaan looks bulky(punum-puno). Initial pitting was reset as the Greenwood stag looked disinterested and P.A.' stag just looking from afar. Then, they changed position with Butch releasing his stag near the rueda door and P.A. on the opposite side. The stags went head-to-head with Greenwood's stag rolling under but releasing kicks left and right, P.A.'s stag was not able to show its game, as it was fatally hit from those shots. The coliseum erupts, Butch and P.A. shake hands. P.A. lost this fight and Stagfighter of the Year award that goes with it.


With Sagupaan, out of the title race, it's now Mulawin's turn to formalize its crowning. Against a winless entry of San Rafael of Mayor Viceo(perfect 3 wins on the elims but only a draw on this finals) and having a total score of 26.5 as against Greenwood's 27.5(19.5+6+2), it needs a win and the +1 bonus point for the runnerup to clinch the title. But as fate would have it, San Rafael got Mulawin on the first buckle, and with blood dripping all over, Mulawin retaliated on its last breath that caught San Rafael. The sentenciador grabbed the two stags, San Rafael pecked twice before passing out. And out Mulawin's aspirations. Butch and Jake Macasaet whoop it up in the ringside. The crown is theirs.

The quest doesn't end there though as Greenwood goes for a back-to-back and unprecedented title of being the NCA and UCAP's StagFighter of the Year, as it continue its campaign today at Araneta in the UCAP's Stag Wars series where it leads the pack, winning the first leg, unscathed at 7 wins.

On last night's 3-stag derby elims(4-stag finals Wednesday), grabe pa rin ang Greenwood Balbina, 2.5 score niya kagabi sa Araneta-UCAP stag series. Patay na stag nila sa second fight, tumakbo naman kalaban, labas bituka ng Arnis Master. Sa third fight, almost equal ang odds, at two wins pa ang kalabang Superman Agilahas, alaws pa rin binatbat sa stags ni Greenwood. Naka-bullet(tari)-proof ata mga stags nila di dinadamdam palo ng kalaban.

Emoy's Tukaan(I think using Butchoy Ang's stags) did also fairly well. Winning its two fights as underdog(lo-tresan ata yung pangalawa agains Tony Lasala's Sagupaan Blue Blade I) but losing its third fight, a Grey. Super malas talisain kagabi, 7 ata talo, alang nanalo.

Anyway, pansin ko lang dito sa stag series ng UCAP, mga bigtime halos no-fight na lahat. Yung entry ni Benjie Lim is now Sagupaan Blue Blade II, which is no fight of course with Sonny Lagons' JBB Blue Blade entry. Jimafer's entry is also now named Sagupaan Balbina Cup GP, which I think is also no fight against entries with names Sagupaan and Balbina like Greenwood Balbina. Si Raymond Velayo na lang yata of Arnis Master entry ang laban sa lahat.

Sonny Lagon btw, won its first fight, but lost its last two. Medyo inaalat, parating pilay-tari.
