THE MAKING OF POSTER BOY by edward tan

"POSTER BOY"
'For the Love of the Hulsey'
19" x 25
watercolor on paper
edward tan 2008

POSTER BOY, now a name soon a Legend....

THE MAKING OF POSTER BOY

It started as an empty watercolor paper attached to a 20” x 26” plywood. With a passion to paint the subject, the painter held his brush, dipped it in water and paint, filled with inspiration and dedication, and “For the Love of the Hulsey” started to translate the passion into art.

The head took the artist more than a day to perfect. Little by little, the grooves on the face of POSTER BOY were slowly being revealed.

Watercolor is the hardest medium for an artist to handle because it does not afford the artist to commit a mistake. The paint is applied gradually, and layer by layer (from light to dark, giving each layer a time to dry).

Re: THE MAKING OF POSTER BOY by edward tan

The hackle of the POSTER BOY was now being started. The trademark of a Hulsey fowl is the “lemon” hackle (although some come out dark red.)

The first layers of yellow, red and violet makes the foundation colors. Soon, thereafter, a layer of darker shades of colors gives the picture volume and life….

The following day, the feathers at the back of the head show brilliant gradations of yellow to yellow-orange colors creating depth; while the dark lines create texture.

Each feather was carefully painted. It’s like a puzzle, painting one feather will lead you to another. Bit by bit, the colors reveal the form of POSTER BOY.

The chest is the target this time. The gradual colors of red to yellow depict the feathers of a real Husley fowl. Dark outline in the chest creates depth and contour.

Re: THE MAKING OF POSTER BOY by edward tan

The artist is feeling inspired to see that the hackle of POSTER BOY is soon being completed. Slowly but surely.. The paper is carefully evaded to create the highlights. In watercolor, there is no white. That is the reason, that in using watercolor, everything should be perfect. No errors, or else….

The hackle is finally complete. A little outline for the legs could be an excellent guide to start painting the body of POSTER BOY.

Only a small portion of the wing was painted. Little time, with the passion to finish a masterpiece is quite frustrating. Enough for the day’s work.

By the way, for the reader’s information, a frame shows the regular view in relation to the watercolor paper, and the other depicts the close up view. Each set of pictures, most of the time, requires the artist a whole day to finish. That’s the reason why each painting consumes the artist’s life and passion.

Undercoat of blue, green and violet for the wings could be an excellent start. The technique of gradually mixing the layers is very obvious, just to arrive at the intricate colors of the feathers.

That’s more like it!!! Beautiful gradation of colors in the wing section of POSTER BOY!!! It’s like a rainbow.

Actually, the artist experienced that painting a feathered gladiator is a very good subject. It would require the play of all the colors. Magnificent!

Slowly, the feathers are starting to glow. They start to bring life to the rooster. That’s enough for the day.

Re: THE MAKING OF POSTER BOY by edward tan

This phase POSTER BOY starts to look like a “tokong”, it is a gamefowl that has no tail feathers caused by feather-picking during their early age.

Layers of red cover the back, while the brilliant colors on the wings are almost complete.

POSTER BOY is almost showing…. It’s getting exciting this time.

Finally, the wing is finished. Notice the white feather. “It’s just the paper.”

Let’s now go to the tail. Such a beautiful bird. No wonder the breeder definitely loves this bird. By the way, the fowl is not only aesthetically pleasing, but it fights excellently too. A typical Hulsey fowl. Best fowl.

During this phase, next day would be the start of classes. There was a hiatus. The painter wrapped POSTER BOY and dropped the paint brush.

Finally, the tail is done. It’s semestral break!!! Time to finish the painting. But, it’s enough for the day.

The artist smiled and felt contented. Beautiful. I could taste it. There are times, that when you look at the painting, it creates a 3 dimensional effect. It’s the “POSTER BOY comes alive” effect.

Finally!!! I talked with the one who commissioned the painting and asked if he still want the background plain white. He asked to make it white.

Although, many would criticize that the painting is full of space, the purpose for leaving the space white is to give more accent to POSTER BOY. The little background at the bottom is just a final touch to create balance to the painting.

Then a signature of the painter will finish the masterpiece.

Collection of Mr. Eduardo V. Ledesma, Jr.

posing together with MANNY "PACMAN" PACQUIAO, Chavit Singzon and Tony Yasay.

Excellent thread. This should be moved so people can read it. It should not be hidden in the TEST forum.
