Probiotic and Antibiotic

Doc Teddy,
How and what is the proper way of using the said medications.Do we give them both at the same time or give antibiotics first then probiotics after? How many days we can give Probiotics in a month? 3 successive days? Your reply will be much appreciated.
Thank You......

Re: Probiotic and Antibiotic

I WANT TO KNOW ALSO SOME ADDITIONAL INPUTS ABOUT THIS TOPIC.

AS FAR AS I KNOW, YOU CAN'T GIVE PROBIOTICS AND ANTIBIOTICS AT THE SAME TIME. PROBIOTICS ARE GOOD BACTERIA IN OUR SYSTEM OR IN OUR CHICKEN'S SYSTEM. SO IF YOU'LL GIVE THE ANTIBIOTICS AND THE PROBIOTICS AT THE SAME TIME, THE PROBIOTICS WILL BE USELESS. BECAUSE THE ANTIBIOTICS WILL KILL BOTH THE GOOD AND BAD BACTERIA.

THANK YOU.

Re: Probiotic and Antibiotic

I also look forward for replies.
I use probiotic capsules from Healthy Options (SM) for fowls with diarrhea.

I would like to ask also if its ok to use probiotics after bacterial flushing during keep. Will it not affect/deminish the supplements/vitamins used in conditioning the fowls?

Re: Probiotic and Antibiotic

gud am/pm cockmates,
to our patients.we give antibiotics and probiotics on the same day during the course of their antibiotic therapy.i'm not sure though if it applies to our chickens.it protects/provides good bacteria in our body and diminishes the chance of less potent/active bacteria to grow thereby preventing secondary infection.i wish our good friend Doc Teddy will provide some answers to above questions.......

I am under the impression that antibiotics kill bacteria both good and bad. By giving probiotics during Antibiotic treatment the good bacteria is killed or weakened and has little to min effect. But giving it after Antibiotic treatment it will restore the good bacteria killed by the antibiotic treatment and help prevent reinfection due to a weakened immune system.

Cheers

Re: Probiotic and Antibiotic

Before anything else, Touchdown and the rest have a good point!

Since antibiotics kill "good" bacteria along with the bacteria that cause illness, a decrease in beneficial bacteria may lead to diarrhea. Taking probiotic supplements (as capsules, powder, or liquid extract) may help replace the lost beneficial bacteria and thus help prevent diarrhea.

Most breeders practice a medication program which includes giving antibiotic for 5 consecutive days on a monthly basis. This is done during their rearing stage to prevent them from contacting disease. Now, to bring back the “useful” bacteria in their system, it is a good practice, to give probiotics 3 days after they've undergone an antibiotic therapy.

Re: Probiotic and Antibiotic

Doc Teddy,
Thank you for your reply. This should help us small/big time breeders to prevent secondary illness such as diarrhea from happening after antibiotic therapy.another helpful tip from our good doctor. Thanks

DGF,
to my understanding.one reason we start probiotics together with antibiotic is to keep replenishing the body with good bacteria during antibiotic therapy to prevent complete depletion of good bacterias thereby preventing early onset of diarrhea which may cause further problem.some doctors would continue probiotic for one or two more days after antibiotic tx.of course,i'm referring to human patients only.....

Re: Probiotic and Antibiotic

this is quite interesting at the same time confusing too. a bit of clarity for everybody on my opinion. when you give antibiotics for bacterial flushing to your chickens, one of the side efffects is diarrhea. even on humans it does happen as not everybody reacts well with the medicine. some with strong gastro intestinal system doesn't show this side effects. that's why i think bacterial flushing should be done on minimal basis only and dosage unless you already have some signs and symptoms of certain diseases. it will make their immune system weak in the long run. thats where probiotics comes in. if you give probiotics regularly to your chicken then you will use less of the antibiotics. probiotics makes your chicken healthy inside. it's good for humans too.

Re: Probiotic and Antibiotic

try using multibionta. it's a multivitamins with probiotics. this is what most british people are using now a days. i've been using it as well and i notice that it helps you empty properly not feeling bloated or constipated. try it...

You can also use PowerPak or Vionate Forte because their active ingredient is lactobacilli.

Hehehe since I learned tjt way of feeding and pointing.... even my bayong lines were kicking good and have more wins than my losses. even captured several championships from 2-3 cock/stag derbies.

Doc Ted,

One of your newly graduate student Edmond from pangasinan is promising.
His show roosters are now in tip-top condition.
I like their "feel" (hipo), full of flesh
If properly pointed.............. that's it
I told him he just need a good knife and skilled gaffer and a little luck

Good luck to him and his Uncle gil_paris2005

Re: Probiotic and Antibiotic

Doc Ted,
How do you administer Probiotic Capsule or PowerPak Powder?
For how many days will you give them this Probiotic, lets say after Bacterial Flushing or Antibiotic Therapy?
For maintenance, is once a month good enough(or too much)?

Lactobacilli capsule/powder can be given on a daily basis with no adverse effect on your chickens.
