Re: 1st and 2ndbreeding
I would only use Brother-Sister mating as my last resort, in order to save a line that is "close to extinction" but still, you would practice strict selection because the problem with "intensive inbreeding"...you produce extremes when it comes to certain traits {either they come out good or very bad}.

Re: 1st and 2ndbreeding
hi doc,
got a follow-up question for that... as you said, when doing intense inbreeding "you produce extremes when it comes to certain traits"... so my question is... "when done with the strict selection" are there still going to be the "same deffects" that you already (supposedly) eliminated by the selection process? if you continue to select the best of the best from each generation, in theory you are "cleaning / straining" out the bad from that line isn't it? so why that its a popular belief that "intense inbreeding" is "something bad" per say and should be avoided at much as posssible? just some thoughts on the matter doc and not to stir up things... ![]() thank you... ![]() |

Quoted from cnucum:
so my question is... "when done with the strict selection" are there still going to be the "same deffects" that you already (supposedly) eliminated by the selection process? The problem with intense inbreeding is that you don’t know what to expect in each generation. Therefore, selection would always be your means of eliminating the bad traits that you observe each time you continue that particular lineage (direct descent from a particular ancestor). I understand your fear about intense inbreeding. We know that this can affect their temperament and they can become nervous & edgy. This trait can only be detected when they are placed in the pit.Their physical characteristics are what can be visibly seen and determined during each breeding. You have to understand that there are some bloodlines that can tolerate too much inbreeding while others can't. Therefore, its a case to case basis.
