World Slasher champ cries: Where's my winner's cup?

LAST June 16, 18 and 20, little known Rey Briones stunned the local cockfighting scene when he emerged co-champion of the World Slasher 8-Cock Cup with veteran Matt Bitanga at the Araneta Coliseum.

But would you believe that until now-or more than three months after-Briones has yet to get his rightful share of the coveted winner's silver cup symbolic of victory in the prestigious championship?

Briones told us over the weekend that he called up several people, including an official of the organizing National Cockers Association and a Big Dome executive, but was given the runaround. I also called, but nobody was around to answer my query. Will somebody please help Rey Briones get his World Slasher Slver Cup? The international derby was hosted by Big Dome owner Nene Araneta, former Rizal Gov. Ito Ynares and Jun Santiago.

Cockfighting is a sport very close to my heart. Now, I'm afraid it has degenerated into a farce, no longer a sport among gentlemen who can be trusted to honor their word. In recent months, it has suffered from messy affairs like the circulation of bad checks, mounting complaints against mismatching and embarassing incidents where derby champions have not been paid or given their prizes as in the case of newcomer Rey Briones.

A virtual unknown in cockfighting, Briones said he was even willing to pay his share of more than P22,000 just to get a replica of the World Slasher Silver Cup, stressing that the champion's cup is his only proof that he indeed won the World Slasher Derby, which is, without question, every cocker's ultimate dream.

"Sana ibigay na nila sa akin ang (I just hope they give me the ) champion's Silver Cup," Briones said, "I have waited long enough."

A tabloid executive, Briones staged his successful debut in this year's World Slasher Derby when his Islander RB scored seven wins in eight fights to share the world championship with Bitanga's Golden Circle.

"I didn't expect to beat the elite field," he humbly said. "Swerte lamang po (I was just lucky)." The emerging talent of 2003, Briones is preparing for the National Bakbakan 9-Stag Derby in November.

Metro Manila being the media capital of the Philippines, we planned to see action someday with our fowls especially the big ones. Now without a doubt, we will stick around in our place. we will forget about Manila and the world slasher. Anyway, we enjoy the stag derbies and lots of cockfighting in our place.
Tama ka erreddo, nakakawalang gana. Very disappointing.

cant believe this.. i thought things like this won't happen in this prestigious event--wsc..whew! so discouraging if this is true. but lets wait, maybe they still awaiting the silver cup replica from italy.

Kaya pala ang sabi ni Kelly Green sa IloIlo at sa bacolod ang gusto nyang lumaban dahil honest daw, pagnanalo ka ayan kaagad ang trophy at pera mo walang onsehan, kaya sa Iloilo na at Negros Col. na kayo sumali. Makakapal na ang mga mukha ng mga tao sa Big pit na yan.

dapat maresolve na e2 na issue.

nakakahiya,hindi lamang sa mga organizers ng WSC, kundi sa sport na sabong. sa panahong e2 na marami na ang komokontra sa sabong (tulad ng nangyari sa states), hindi dapat mangyari ang tulad nito.

hindi magbabago ang pananaw ng mga tao sa lipunan na "mataas ang pinag-aralan" tungkol sa sabong.

alam natin maraming tao na hindi nagsasabong,o kaya ay hindi nakakainitindi sa sabong, ay iniisip nila na ang sabong ay sugal lamang.at maraming sabungero (hindi kaya nilalahat na) ay mga
mandurugas at manloloko.

isa pa, bakit kay briones lng nangyari e2? nagpapatunay ba na may may unequal treatment pag mayaman at mahirap?
