Handling and Medication of Imported Breeding Stocks

Good day Doc Teddy.

I am expecting a trio from the US end of this month or first week of next month and I have prepared a checklist for my father/brother o the things they need to prepare and do.

Can you please advice what are the things I missed?

Preparation for arrival:

1. Prepare cage with mosquito net all around the cage.
2. Disinfect all surrounding areas including the cage for the new arrival..

Before going to the airport, make sure you have the following:

1. New box with fresh banana leaves
2. Sack
3. Thunderbird Platinum
4. Mineral water
5. Feeder
6. Power Pack
7. Electrolyte
8. B-12 Injectable
9. Multi vitamins

Upon receiving of the birds:

1. Open the box one by one and inspect for overall health status and look for sign of infection (nose, mouth, eyes and breathe).
2. Wash their face, give soft diet (Thunderbird Platinum soak in mineral water with Power Pack), electrolytes and then inject 0.50cc B-12 and give multi-vitamins capsule.
3. Place them in a new box with fresh leaves.

Re: Handling and Medication of Imported Breeding Stocks

Upon arrival at the farm:

1. Wash face and place them in to the cage with mosquito net. Cage must be sterilized or sanitised and put them in well ventilated and quiet place.
2. Every morning, give them probiotic (like lactobacillus cultures in capsule, powder form or yakult) and sterilised water 30 min before feeding for 5 days. 2 time a week after completing the 5 days.
3. Give them soft diet for 3 days. Thunderbird Platinum soak in mineral water with power pack then gradually give them the normal feed.
4. If they don't have appetite, use tube feeding as explain by Doc TJT.
5. Observe and inspect their discharge (ipot), nose, mouth, eyes and breathe throughout the day until they are back to normal. If there is sign of infection, inject ¾ ml (bactericidal dose) Terramycin LA under the skin neck area no need to do a follow except in rare cases and should be done after three days. If viral (NCD, Marek, IBD, fowl pox, and others) no medicine to for them but Terramycin LA will help them not to have secondary infection. Terramycin is effective to non-tetracycline resistant bacteria. If bacteria is resistant to tetracycline, switch immediately to other antibiotic like penicillin type, tylosin and others. If the infection protozoa, give them sulfa drugs. After treatment, give them probiotic.
6. After 2 weeks, give them vaccine for fowl fox.
7. Before putting them on the ground, do bacterial flushing.

Re: Handling and Medication of Imported Breeding Stocks

Upon Arrival:
You can use Bactidol Oral Antiseptic (in mercury) to clean their beak and throat. It is also beneficial to apply VetRX afterwards (2 drops down to their throat) because it would relieve them of any respiratory distress.

Instead of giving pellets, i suggest that you give them bread & milk. Then the following day, give 50% boiled grains {lutong luto at malambot} mixed with 50% pellets. This would be their special diet for 2 weeks.

I don't recommend using Terramycin LA injectable for bacterial flushing. Instead, you can use Terramycin Capsule 250mg or Ceporex Capsule 250mg. {mercury drug store}. Given only for one day if all birds are OK.
Always check for abnormal signs and be on guard for possible digestive problems like crop bound and green droppings {diarrhea}.

Vaccinate immediately against Fowl Pox on the third day. Please take note that this should only be done if the health status of the fowls are stable.

After a week , you can go on with your NCD vaccination.

When it comes to their supplements and vitamins, i know your father can still recall those medicines i've recommended when he attended the academy. The first 2 weeks is the most crucial part and in case of emergency, call me @ 09165742427.
