Angry Scandalous Display of Wealth

Scandalous display of wealth
Posted: 2:37 AM (Manila Time) | Sept. 23, 2003
Inquirer News Service

FORMER Senator Anna Dominique "Nikki" Coseteng made a spectacle of herself when she took part in a big-time cockfight derby in Naga City during the celebration of the feast of Our Lady of Penafrancia.

And a spectacle it was!

No, it was not her beauty that was the attraction but the stacks of peso bills on the tables in front of the former senator from Quezon City and the governors of Albay, Camarines Norte and Masbate.

* * *

To top it all, Coseteng had her own aides who placed bets, found matches and collected for her. These guys are called cristos and casadores.

The bets were so big they were "mind-boggling," according to the reporter who wrote the story and apparently witnessed the betting.

The politicians and the ex-senator "seemed to be throwing away so much money," the Inquirer's Juan Escandor Jr. said.

* * *

In front of Coseteng and the Bicol governors were stacks of cash amounting to 10,000, 20,000 and 50,000 pesos. The money on the tables amounted to millions of pesos.

Escandor said, the stacks of cold cash changed hands from the losers to the winners after each cockfight.

If that was not a blatant show of wealth, then what was it?

* * *

While national officials based in Manila are cowering in fear of the lifestyle check, the Bicol governors and the ex-senator were unashamedly displaying their wealth!

When they could have fed thousands of their hungry constituents with those millions, those local officials and the ex-senator were throwing away money like they were used toilet paper!

Guilt? Shame? Those government cockfight aficionados don't have any.

* * *

Coseteng is no longer in the government service, so she could not be criticized for her blatant display of wealth. She could claim, "What the heck, it's my money that I gambled!"

And even if she was elected to Congress (she lost to Maite Defensor in Quezon City's 3rd district), she would not still be included in the lifestyle check as legislators are excluded from the check.

* * *

But those Bicol governors who unashamedly displayed their wealth -- Al Francis Bichara of Albay, Jesus Typoco Jr. of Camarines Norte and Antonio Kho of Masbate -- should be investigated.

They should be made to explain where they got the millions they threw away at the Caceres Sports Arena.

They are either probably filthy rich or they got the money from the coffers of their provincial governments.

If I remember right, Nikki Coseteng was born rich, please correct me if I'm incorrect! If she pits her rooster and bet 10 million pesos of her money and not people's money, I don't have a problem with that, especially if it's cold cash, setting an example to other gentlemen sabungeros that the cockpit's rule of cash only should be observed. If she is not a government employee or a public official in power , then she is entitled to any method of disposing and or displaying of her wealth INSIDE THE THE COCKPIT,the Peso
now is just like japanese money while I was growing up, when we bet in our game of bug-oy they will not fit our small bags,we will put them in bayongs.
My opinion 2.

My opinion only...bet only the amount you can afford to lose...if you can afford to lose 10 million per bet, no problem. Your own money no problem.

If it is the people's money...hey there is no way to eradicate corruption or embezzlement. It will always be around. You bet it and lose it...no problem.

Just don't get caught doing it that's all.

i was there. nikki was still very pretty, although medyo she grew sideways a bit. a bit lang. gov. kho was there. and the others too. except for gov. bichara. but i didn't see those stacks of money that tulfo wrote about in connection with nikki. in fact she didnt sit in the ringside. sa 2nd row lang siya umupo. i understand she wants cockers to know that she is into sabong, hence her entry name was - well, nikki coseteng. but i think tulfo's article was too exagerrated. ang masasabi ko lang, penafrancia yung derby na yun, despite the molting season, people like these governors and others were able to put up roosters that not only had feathers, lumaban din nga parang bigtime. bottom line is, hindi totoo na ganun kalakas ang pusta ng mga taong tinukoy ni tulfo. mabilis lang ikinakasa ang mga manok nila. usually, malaki ang pusta ni gov, pero ang nalalargahan lang ay konte. nuff said.

Marami na tayong naririnig na mga politico na nag-uumpisa nang magsabong.....Si Ronnie Puno, Nikki Coseteng....Marami pang susunod niyan.....They know that sabong and politics do mix....Si Puno, tatakbo yan sigurado, si Nikki, trying to make a comeback........

Ang mga political dynasties especially in the North ay puro pamilya nang mga sabungeros.....The Dy's of Isabela, Joson's of Nueva Ecija, the late Tito Dupaya of Cagayan, Singson's of Ilocos Sur......Pati nga si PA nanalo na congressman kasi sabong idol siya....Susunod kaya si Sonny Lagon sa yapak niya? heheehe.....

Exclamation

Wannabe-inggitero

---------------------------------------

Emoy,

I am a big fan of yours! A man in your position should write to Tulfo and tell him the facts as you witnessed and experienced firsthand in the event. Tulfo is a writer and as we all know can be influential, now if you feel what he wrote is a lie. Don’t you think this is irresponsible journalism and laible to be charged with libel in a court of law?

Now when you said a couple of big-shot governors were engaging in the activity. Didn't the national government impose a new guidelines to public servants about going to cockpits and gambling houses, with the so-called "lifestyle check"? Now I am really not comfortable with this because it implies to 'sabong' which is really a part of our cultural and national heritage. But what is in bad taste is when these Public Servants act like big shots in the betting, I mean have some delicadeza. If I am a Governor of an improverished province in which the per capita is less than 50% of the national per capita, throwING money away in front of the hungry crowds like theres' more where it came from? At least have the decency to wage the minimum in the front and obscene amount in the back end, right?

Another point to think about going back to a case of 'conflict of interest' even if said public servants are guilty of, what kind of industry do you think a poor province like like Bicol can produce that can make individuals Millionaires' in their wildest dreams and imaginations? If not the numbers racket(doubtful) how about the narco-trade? Did you know drugs like 'shabu' is an epidemic in poor provinces like Bicol? Bro's, I am not a rocket scientist nor a brain surgeon but don’t you think we can equate simple logic by doing the math?

Checks-To-Cash!!!

It's a good thing that checks are not as bulky as cash, kundi ay baka himatayin yung writer pag naka-panood siya sa bigger derbies!!

Your check is good but we prefer cash, kahit kunti lang kaya namin ipusta.

Philippines is a poor country, If you really go around and expose yourself to the countryisde and slum areas and watch those deprived children survive their daily means, you cant hep but become sensitive to issues involving politician's, unless you do not care at all! I have yet to see a politician who do not rub the government from the top down to baranggay captains!

Well, Emoy was absolutely right, he did not see those money. well , who saw it does not matter much anymore. Politician shud lose their previlege of any display of any of their wealth in public. We are a country of having public servants of robbers. well it is a just a wishful thinking. mas maraming pera ang mga magnanakaw na politiko. mas makapal ang mukha!

scandalous display of wealth

Sa pagkakaalam ko ang mga nabanggit na mga tao ay kani-kaniyang may sariling yaman at kakayahan na pumusta ng malakihan at " bet with abandon, as if money is going out of style."
2. Gov. "Atoy" Typoco ng Camarines Norte- Ang Typoco family
ang pinakamalaking negosyo sa copra, palay,
at isda sa Camarines Norte. Maraming fishing
boats ito na nasa Mercedes fishport.
Multi-milyonaryo na ito bago pa man pumasok
sa pulitika.
3. Gov.
4. Gov. Bicharra ng Albay- Multi-milyonaryo ang familya nito.
Malaki ang negosyo, e.g. chain of
cinemas, etc.
And Mon Tulfo, please don't set a double standard for delicadeza,
like, "kababae mo pa naman", or you will be projecting yourself as a " male chauvinist pig", not as balanced and fair writer.
Mabuhay kayong lahat,"if you've got it, show it!"

Nagbabayad naman in cash to cash basis. Hindi nagbabayad ng "basketball". I say feel free to bet as much as you want. Kaya nga bottom line ng sabong is gambling.

Primary aspect of sabong is gambling.

Ex Senator Nikki Coseteng can bet as much as she wants as long as she settles everything on cash to cash basis after every match. There seems to be no problem with her settling every bet, so I say if you can bet that high...why the hell not!

To sabong! And to gambling!
