or check the oil gland at the base of the tail. sometimes it atrophies and the rooster have no oil to apply to his feathers thus the dry and often brittle feathers. sabat lang.

Re: Dull Feathers !!why Thus My Birds Have Them?

I appreciate the pictures that you posted since it allows me...... to have a clear assessment of the problem.
Before anything else, please take note that birds are now undergoing their yearly moulting process(June-Nov). At this particular time, it would be best that you focus on preparing them for a good moult. I suggest, that you stop giving them vitamins and additives because these would only disrupt and prolong their natural moulting process.
Here are some pointers for you to consider:
  • Improve the quality of the soil by adding new soil on top of the areas where you keep them.
  • Avoid dipping them in a pail of water (water bath) as it would deplete their oil glands and result in the loss of sheen in their feathers.
  • Another problem with the "water bath" is that right after dipping them, they have the tendency to wallow in the soil and this would attract dirt and dust that can make their feathers dull.
  • During moulting....provide them with a balanced ration. Remember that plant (grains) protein is considered by poultry nutritionist as a poor quality source of protein. Therefore, you have to balance it by mixing... "fish meal" and "meat & bone meal" {at least 5-10% in their ration} as these are the best source of animal protein (good-quality protein).
  • It would be best if they are given the chance to be corded in an area where thay can enjoy the mildew in the morning and carabao grass and sunlight during the day.
  • Cod liver oil and wheat germ oil is a must during moulting.
