Dubbing Stags
You can time your dubbing during the hardening period when the stags are starting to be tamed and are already feeding well. It is not advisable to dub the stags as you start cording them since getting tied on teepees is one form of stress and dubbing is another form. Dub stags after you have fed them in the afternoon, so that when you return them to their individual pens, it's already time for resting and sleeping. This will help them recuperate faster. One day before dubbing, give blood clotting medication like Vitamin K to lessen the bleeding. Have your scissors on hand and sharpened. Instruct your assistant to hold the stags and start cutting the wattles first then the ears followed by the comb. Place the stags individually in their pens to rest for the night.

Re: Dubbing stags

I was told a long time ago to only dub in Feb. and when a front has passed.
This is supposed to keep bleeding and stress to a minimum, likely because of the low temps make the blood run thicker and the fact that all animals feel more secure with a drop in the barometric pressure. I cannot say if this is just a myth or not as I have never done it at any other time. We just use some bloodstop and do it near dark and keep them very very clean until the healing is complete. Works well for us.
