Stingy Hen
Greetings Doc:
I have an old imported hen whose very stingy in laying eggs. The most that she's layed is 5 eggs and the majority of which came out infertile or did not hatch. (bloodring on the 1st candling) Can you please give me tips on how to improve her laying, fertility and hatchability? Thank you. |

Re: Stingy Hen
Doc pasingit lang nang isa at nabuburyong lang dito ngayon...
Here's my take on this by my personal experience...How olds the hen...if she's well beyond 2 yrs nagdedecline ang egg laying - 5 yrs max on the ave for them to be counted on as good breeders. Also up the protein , dagdag ka nang fishmeal/soybean meal combo sa laying mash and wet the feed...tipong malapot na putik if the waether is really hot and dry. 16 hrs minimum lighting ang kailangan per day para ma-trigger anf egg laying. Here;s the bad news, yes, i've owned a hen like this ...not sure how old she was dahil binigay lang sa akin...I would say gthere are probably hens na maramot mangitlog...try the approach above...kung hindi umubra it must be the hen...just hope u get oustanding fowl from whatever few hatches u get from her. |

Re: Stingy Hen
Thanks preng unico for sharing.
I’m hoping Doc Teddy that you can give some new insight regarding this matter aside from what most breeders already know like, increasing protein intake and trying to simulate a long daylight by 16 hours. Can you recommend a new drug perhaps? I was thinking of using Gluthathion, which as you know is a major anti-oxidant more potent that Vit.E as claimed by nutritionists. If what they claim is true maybe it can slightly reverse aging in my brood hen by cell renewal. Thus increase her egg production and fertility. Likewise can you suggest another non-injectable vitamin to replace Introvit but still as potent? Their breast would be riddled by needle pricks by the time I finish if I’d use B12 and Introvit injectables., |

Re: Stingy Hen
Darkwing,
Just a suggestion, Try using reliable breeder pellet all throughout her life, do not change her feeding even during moulting season for them to be in good shape and to maintain their condition in laying eggs. This system would make priming up broodstocks easier for you, and would increase fertility and hatchability. Gamecock Breeder pellets are specially formulated for our beloved hens, Laying mash is a special formulation for table-egg-laying-Hens |

Re: Stingy Hen
Darkwing
Aside from giving all the necessary nutritional support, I have experimented on giving pre-natal vitamins with encouraging results. Giving pre-natal vitamins (like Natalins-M w/ flouride) with hormones intended for human beings (half the amount) to old hens can improve their breeding performance. But one should understand that age would be the biggest factor why she is no longer productive. Another factor is her weight.....try to maintain her as lean as possible because "fat hens are not as prolific (good layers) as lean hens". Re: Stingy Hen
Thanks Doc TJT. I'll try the pre-natal vitamins as you reccommend. I'll be posting results of my gluthathion experiment as well.
I never change the feed of my hens even in the off season. I just try to increase the protein content during breeding season. Yes. Like you guys I use breeder pellets. Thanks for the suggestion guys! Lemon edz, I used to feed my breeders pure breeder pellets but now add concentrate as they need grains too. I also mix a little oyster grit from time to time. |
