Bumblefoot

Bumblefoot/Tibak is a bruise on the rooster's footpad and this is due to being overweight and is aggravated by frequent jumping on a hard packed ground from a high roost.
The best remedy is "Cryosurgery" ... and this is done by putting dry ice on the swollen footpad. But dry ice is no longer available.

"Staphylococcus aureus" is a gram positive, anaerobic bacteria that invades the foot pad and with that in mind..Sealing the entire footpad will not allow the bacteria to survive. This is done by applying a synthetic (rubber) sealant to the swollen footpad and then, covered with a bandage (Leukoplast) to ensure protection. After a day, you inject .5 cc of Penicillin shot or Streptopen directly to the foot pad. Results can be seen after 2 months.
To prevent this:
1) A low roost should be provided.
2) They should always be placed on a soft ground.
3) Limit his weight.

TJT I wasn't able to watch your segment in toto. I have one query... at what stage do I put that sealant? kapag hinog na o kahit bago pa lang at namumula pa? salamat!!

You can apply the sealant whenever you noticed a bruise (big or small) in their footpad. This would serve as a cushion and a protection against bacteria. Don't forget to wrap it with a gauze bandage and an adhesive leukoplast to fix it in place for weeks.

Doc tjt,

thank for the information........

just a question doc....

does removal of bumblefoot by means of operation an acceptable solution to this problem?
coz this is what we usually do...even thou we know it is too painful for our feathered gladiators.....

but i guess with the info you shared with us things will change..

keep on cocking...

This is just an input. In 70s to 80s when medical and technical opinions were rare, what we did when bumblefoot or "tibak" occurs was, we put the cock in a clean ground with lushy vermuda, it served right, tibak peals off little by little and subsequently gone for good, night roost made of bamboo, velvety skinned type of bamboo, we call it "patong", it helped a lot.
