do you fight spiders in MS also? where do you fight your spiders when you were still in PI? there are a lot of venues for fighting spiders here in cebu, there is even a veneu here where they only feature derbies for spiders.. http://www.sabong.com.ph/UbbNonCgi/icons/icon33.gif |

We do the spider fightin not in Ms but in P.I. (Cavite), its only like a "katuwaan". My 7 year old son really loves the fighting instinct of this creature. [This message has been edited by phcajun (edited 07-30-2002).] |

I dont know the name or breeding of these spiders but basically, spiders with reddish brown color with long arms and the body size is around 10mm, these types are much more mean than other breeds, they can be found in grass leaves (spiders found up in any tree are'nt good gladiators). How the fight goin? There is also an "ulutan" and if both agreed, there is a straight wooden stick (Like Barbecue stick) where we place both spiders, spider who fell 3xtimes in the ground, lost the game. Some also knew how to condition their spiders, by giving water with dextrose powder and milk (They let a cotton buds soak with this mixture and let the spider drink). Like gamecocks, better them to fight with empty stomach as they are really a "killing machine" and with a wink of an eye, game is over!!! |

phcajun,
you said that spiders from trees are not good.I think it depends on the color of the spider that comes from trees especially, guava, aratiles and banana spiders are game and quick if their color is brown to dark in color, not the yellow ones, those are dunghills. The bravest and smartest of spiders that I have experience with are the spiders homing in kuryente or power transmission lines.Just my opinion and experience and do not like to offend anybody. |

Denas06, Kaibigan, I am curious with this topic. You seem to be an expert at this spider-sabong sport. I have never been involved in this except oh so long ago when I was a kid and my cousins and I fought house spiders on a ting ting. Can you expand on the characteristics and qualities of various spiders. Also, please expand on why the spiders homing in kuryente and transmission lines are your picks of bravest and smartest spiders. Please expand on what characterizes a smart spider. And please expand also on different fighting styles of different spiders. Thanks in advance. Appreciate your information on this. |

Yes, the kuryente spider which is jet black in color is a fierce fighting machine. When I was a kid growing up in the province, my friends and I used to go to the corn fields and catch spiders. We put them in matchboxes, usually 6 to a box with dividers so they won't kill each other. We then sell them to the rich filipino-chinese kids in the town centro, a little spending money..hehehe...
Like gamecocks, spiders have a natural instinct to fight and kill another spider. Another spider that is a good fighter is the one with a spot on its behind. We call them "talaan" in the dialect. Spider fighting is fun when I was a kid. Brings back memories.... |

If an american is reading this, he will be amazed if he had not heard it before
Who spent his boyhood in Pinas and did not mess with gagambas? hehehe, that was and still is in way comparable to sabong, I agree with you guys. Even when I was a grade school kidd in Tambo, Paranaque, we would scrounge the airfield, grassed areas, of MIA to look for spiders. In the province, the Guava, Sampalok, talahib, and just any little tree type of spider are good, as long as they are fresh and in good size. I find the ones in the corn fields soft and lack in speed and tenacity--yellows. Yes, I agree, the gagambang kuryente (black with reddish on thighs) are one of the best. Over here in UK, there are plenty of gagamba...specially on Fall season. They look similar with Pinas' but does not fight as good, no, not even close. They won't fight on a tingting. Not giving up, I still tried (this was last year)...even showed my american drinking buddies. I have to put them together on a slippery cup and move the cup for them to get by each other, thus sometimes, not all the time, they fight. One biting round and both would kalas, they are truly the dunghills of the spider clans...hehehe. Kidd |

phcajun is correct!!! the breeds that are found in the grass are best for fighting, i know. we have been consistently fighting every year, it is fighting season once again, just in time for the moulting season of our cocks..
denas, yellow colors are not dunghills.. i have a friend who favors only yellow spiders and is very competetive.. i think it really depend on their comformation, how you condition and where you keep your fighters, just like cocks.. gagambang kuryente??? hehe.. when i was very much younger, i used to believe that those black spiders are also from electic power lines.. they are not. charlie, characteristics basing from my experience.. reds(almost light orange) - the best, very mean, agile and smart. blacks - i agree, they are very fast and will grow very big. we got to fight against one back in 1999, since it was very big(its "kasway" or legs are as big and as thick as that of a cockroach), we got to fight it two against one. our first spider was also big, but not as big, we were just thinking that if we can get the first bite and get the poinon in, then our second spider would just finish the job. but to our surprise, our first spider just threw the opponent from the stick, twice!! so we won that fight with just one spider. anyway, just like the blacks and brownreds(cocks), they pass out very easily. yellow - slow but very strong. will just throw their oppenents from the stick. marka zero(the one with the spot on their backs) - will depend on the color. red - great black - good greyish - best white to yellow - dunghill there are also those with senyales on their backs, bellies and fangs.. these ones hardly ever lose. again, these are just from my observation. kidd, fighting spiders are not for the children anymore..hehe.. it is gaining a huge following. bets can go as high as 10T per fight or even more in others. you can either go to hackfights or there are also 3-kak derbies..hehe..(kak or kaka) they will also match the spiders with the same weight using a jewelers electronic weighing scale, with pot money and everything just like a regular cock derby. most that fight spiders are also cockfighters and people that you see in the cockpits. How can you tell if the spider is male or female? Maybe we can start breeding them. We do have a lot of games back then; larung gagamba, trumpo, sipa, patintero, taguan, all these without buying toys... keeping us fit before Nanay calls you home to eat dinner. What about the beetle, I think they also fight. Am I right?

Yes, Drav...I know that, well, at least heard of it. I used to bet kinse sentimos too on mines...hehehe.
Camarines, in my experience all those who bulges their body, will eventually lay eggs. But true, there are males and females...I just looked for it on the net, hehehe. The Pinas spider kind that we fight are distinct...we call them "tagpi" in Paranaque. Tagpi is like texas in sabong; gagambang bahay is the native, hehehe. We call the one with spot on the back "ordin." There is this gagambang pitik also...no, not your fingers, they're green and does not look like Tagpi. They can fight a tagpi and win as they are very good in Pitik, so the name. So, on a true fight, no Tagpi will fight a Pitik. There is this lazy, sleepy, and mostly no good gagambang demonyo too...hehehe, talagang may sungay eh. Siempre, meron ding Pari, religious ito...at di rin kasali kasi nga Tagpi lang ang labanan. Huuu, gagamba anyone... Kidd |

Friends,
I think all the spiders that are being fought in the Phil. are females. Most males are being eaten by the females right after they mate. |

Guys,
Great topic! Brings back good memories... during the time when Las Pinas and Paranaque were mostly farm lands and salt beds. Kidd remember that area of Jale Beach? That's where we got most of our aces.....LOL. I agree with Draven, like his friend, we also prefer to use those "dangkawans" that are yellowish brown in color with long legs. The best ones we had were the "tagpiros" named after the "tagpi" or patch like appearance they have on their backs. The multi winners we had were dark brown with white patch. Rarely did we find these but they are hard to beat. During the ulutan in school, no one wants to be matched against these "tagpiros". Childhood in the Philippines.....priceless!!! |

I used to catch some big spiders we call udto-udto. It has a very sticky web and is bigger than any ordinary gagambas that we fought. They said it was poisonous and no one dared to catch it. Well, I did and they did not bite me. Walang gustong lumaban sa akin so i decided to catch some more of it and placed it in a big glass to fight the royal battle.
Still not satisfied, we look for little snakes in our place, catch it and removed their teeth and placed it in a matchbox. We let them loose in a crowd of kids or put them in a drum with water. If we found a bigger snake, we catch them and get a cat, put them in a basketball court(clay or soil court) and their you go, pusta na!!! Sa pusa or sa ahas!!! Guess who won? |

Rebel, you got one heck of a childhood...playing with ahas! hehehe...
I know a boy who plays with them too...catches snake by throwing an empty sack (used for rice) on it, covering it, and then presses on it. One time he did not press the right part, the head, and the snake bit him. Candles were lit day and night for 5 days...hehehe. Kidd |

Thanks Draven,
Those are good websites. Okinawa, Japan has bull fights (bull against bull) and also mongoose and snake fight. Mongoose always wins the fight though. The snake are dried and use for medicinal purpose. |

I know some odd-looking ones. These are made like catchcocks. In tagalog, pampatapang which I was very fond also when I was a kid:
1. tutungko - a hunchback spider usually brown in color. 2. gagambang melon - yellowish white in color . A dunghill. Mostly found in ornamental plants. 3. pipintig - a seemingly transparent spider which has long legs and light green in color.Found in bamboo trees. In my younger days if we call a kid gagambang melon, this means that kid cannot fight or defend himself when needed. A weeping boy. |

I remember way back early 70's in place , inside the sabungan when we are waiting for sultada , a lot of the sabungeros including me brought thier own spider and like our gamecock ulutan , we place our spider at the end of a stick ( banana stick or walis tingting) and try to look for a match , after that we will go to our rueda , a table as big as sakla table , with a string attached to both sides , and that's where we put our spiders at the ends of the string before releasing them , we also have a sentenciador, and of course there's also a plasada , first one to fall down or first one to be bitten at the puwet, or first one to be wrapped by a web loose. I have a 4 x winner spider, i called him abatik because of his spotted white color like the spangled rooster and i found my spider on the leaves of a guava tree , i fed my spider with flies if it does'nt have any fight , but when it's time to fight , i will not feed him 3 to 4 days before the fight and thats a very effective conditioning for a spider.

ron,
well, tell your cousins to send me all fighting spiders that will be bigger than a P5 coin and i'll buy them @ 250 each or if they are really big, even P500 each... then we can make some money betting on them.:teeth: but i have to tell you, in all of our years of fighting them, it is very hard to come across a fighting spider that is bigger than a P5 coin.. we don't use black widow or red widow in fighting, bai.. you know that..hehe..:sprcool: |
